WHAT YOU SEE "Behold, you [God] desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart." -- Psalm 51:6 (RSV) Lovisnowhere! When you saw this jumbled sentence, what was the very first thing you saw? I mean, the very first thing? Some would have seen "Love is now here," some "Love is nowhere," and a few may have seen "Love i snow here." We're probably all aware of the saying, "What you see is what you get." But more often than not the sentence, "What you see is what you are," is much closer to the truth. For example, those who saw in the jumbled sentence, "Love is nowhere," more likely than not are feeling that their need for love is not being adequately met right now. Those who saw, "Love is now here," probably are feeling their need for love is being met. And the few who may have seen, "Love I snow here," are probably great devotees of skiing!" The reality is, "We see things not the way they are but the way we are!" And. . .the more dishonest we are and into denial and defensive about our character flaws, the more we will distort all truth to make it match our perception of reality -- and see things the way we want to see them. On the other hand, the more honest, open and realistic we are about our true selves, the clearer we will see all other truth, including God's truth. What we all badly need is to see ourselves exactly as God sees us -- warts and all -- and love and accept ourselves as God loves and accepts us, totally and unconditionally. Once we do this, we are free, with God's help and the support of loving friends, to grow and change. But as long as we are in denial about our character flaws and blind to our own reality, we can never grow or change because we don't see the need to. And then, the more we project the blame for our problems onto others. When we are into truth instead of denial, we are in the perfect place for God to help us for God is Truth and it's truthfulness that he wants and needs from us so he can give us his greatest blessings! "Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you that you see and know me exactly as I am and love me regardless. Please help me to know and see myself as you do and love and accept myself also as you do, so I will be free to change and grow. Gratefully in Jesus' name. Amen." |
